Azuka Theatre Continues to Champion Local Philadelphia Voices with New Playwrights' Group Featuring Production Commitment

Hot on the heels of receiving the Independence Award for Outstanding Production of a New Play (The Gap by Emma Goidel) at The Barrymore Awards, Azuka Theatre announces a new writers’ program designed to develop new works by Philadelphia playwrights. Azuka has long been a champion for local voices and this new writer’s group represents the next level of support. New Pages gives local playwrights a unique writer-centric space to develop their work. Based on the needs and processes of the individuals in the group, New Pages seeks to support Philadelphia playwrights from the spark of an idea to a production-ready script. Azuka Theatre has committed to producing one play per season by a writer from this group for the next three years, beginning in its 2019-2020 season. This is the first writers group in Philadelphia to make a commitment for full productions, and Azuka hopes to not only foster playwrights as they build full bodies of work, but to help them deepen their roots in the Philadelphia theatre community.

Philadelphia Theatre Company is ready to take off into the future. The company announced its first produced season under its new leadership team, Producing Artistic Director Paige Price and Managing Director Emily Zeck, to an audience in the theatre’s space in the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, 480 S. Broad St. PTC announced that this inaugural season under new leadership includes a Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Lynn Nottage that takes place in Pennsylvania, a World Premiere from the 2017 Kilroys List, and a TONY-winning Jason Robert Brown musical set in the Midwest during the 60s based on a popular bestselling novel. After a sold-out run for Lost Girls, Theatre Exile closes their 20th anniversary season with Buzzer by Tracey Scott Wilson. Gentrification comes to a head as the thought-provoking social drama fans the flames of love, race, class and privilege. This Philadelphia premiere explores the effects of a changing neighborhood on three 20-somethings that share a long and winding history -- and a not-so-certain future. Philadelphia Artists’ Collective, in partnership with Philadelphia School of Circus Arts, presents the Philadelphia premiere of He Who Gets Slapped, from March 30 to April 16, 2016, at Broad Street Ministry (315 S. Broad Street). A cast of clowns, lion-tamers and ringmasters perform their routines under a striped awning and glowing lights.  When a new clown arrives, his cheerful makeup conceals a dark secret from his past.
