Azuka Theatre continues to foster new works by local Philadelphia playwrights with the world premiere of Ship by Douglas Williams. Following a critically acclaimed and sold out run of Sunset Baby by Dominique Morriseau, Azuka continues their 2019-2020 season with the New Professionals Production of Ship from February 26 to March 15, 2020, presented at The Proscenium Theatre at The Drake (302 Hicks Street, Philadelphia). In Ship, audiences find Nell fresh out of rehab and returning to her hometown of Mystic, CT with two goals: track down her former classmate who tried and failed to grow the longest fingernails in the world, and be promoted to the most high profile job in town: tour guide at the Seaport. With the help and hindrance of her older sister, Nell grabs at her chance for hometown glory – but it’s not as easy as it looks.

Azuka Theatre Presents the Philadelphia Premier and New Professional Production of BOB: A Life in Five Acts Feb 27 to March 17, 2019

Azuka Theatre presents the return of the Virginia & Harvey Kimmel New Professionals Production with the Philadelphia Premiere of BOB: A Life in Five Acts by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb. BOB chronicles the highly unusual life of Bob and his lifelong quest to become a "Great Man." The play is a comedic exploration of American mythology and values, the treacherous pursuit of happiness, and discovering what it means to be truly "great." This everyman tale is directed by Michael Osinski, who previously directed Azuka’s Moth.  This new professional’s production features the rising talent of Paul Harrold, Sabriaya Shipley, Frank Jimenez, Claris Park and Dan D’Albis. BOB runs from February 27 to March 17, with opening night set for Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 7:00pm.

Azuka Theatre Continues to Champion Local Philadelphia Voices with New Playwrights' Group Featuring Production Commitment

Hot on the heels of receiving the Independence Award for Outstanding Production of a New Play (The Gap by Emma Goidel) at The Barrymore Awards, Azuka Theatre announces a new writers’ program designed to develop new works by Philadelphia playwrights. Azuka has long been a champion for local voices and this new writer’s group represents the next level of support. New Pages gives local playwrights a unique writer-centric space to develop their work. Based on the needs and processes of the individuals in the group, New Pages seeks to support Philadelphia playwrights from the spark of an idea to a production-ready script. Azuka Theatre has committed to producing one play per season by a writer from this group for the next three years, beginning in its 2019-2020 season. This is the first writers group in Philadelphia to make a commitment for full productions, and Azuka hopes to not only foster playwrights as they build full bodies of work, but to help them deepen their roots in the Philadelphia theatre community.

Azuka Theatre kicks off their 18th season with the world premiere of The Gap by Emma Goidel. Rebecca Wright directs this dark comedy and mystery that centers around family secrets, performing, and sisterhood. Audiences will ask themselves, what's ultimately worse: forgetting or remembering? Presented in the Louis Bluver Theatre at The Drake, The Gap previews begin Wednesday, November 1, opens on Saturday, November 4 and runs through November 19, 2017.
