Philadelphia Theatre Company Introduces Taibi Magar and Tyler Dobrowsky as New Co-Artistic Directors for Company's Next Chapter

After a nation-wide search, the Board of Directors of Philadelphia Theatre Company (PTC) has found its new artistic leadership: the company is thrilled to welcome the nationally acclaimed husband-and-wife team of Taibi Magar and Tyler Dobrowsky as PTC’s new co-Artistic Directors. Following the five-year tenure of Paige Price, who stepped down to focus on commercial theatre producing, Magar and Dobrowsky will start their official duties this September. Magar is an Egyptian-American director whose work has been seen across the US as well as internationally, and her many accolades include an Obie Award for Directing (2018, Is God Is by Aleshea Harris), the “Break Out Award” from the Stage Directors and Choreographers Union and her Lortel-winning revival of Anna Deveare Smith’s Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 is set to open at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA, this fall. Dobrowsky is the former Associate Artistic Director and Director of New Play Development at Trinity Repertory Company, a Tony-award winning theater located in Providence, RI. He has two decades of experience producing high-quality regional theater, with a particular focus on community engagement, creating education programs for young people, and developing world premiere plays and musicals. Together they possess a robust artistic skill set, a broad, deep network of actors, directors, and playwrights, and world class directing and producing abilities. They will partner with current Managing Director Emily Zeck to set the stage for PTC’s new chapter, which begins this fall with the World Premiere of The Tattooed Lady opening Friday, November 4, as PTC celebrates 15 years in the Suzanne Roberts Theatre.

Philadelphia Theatre Company First Stop for World Premiere Where We Belong by Madeline Sayet

Philadelphia Theatre Company closes out its 47th season with the world premiere of an insightful new work that begins a national tour in the City of Brotherly Love. PTC is excited to launch the National Tour of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company’s production of Where We Belong, in association with Folger Shakespeare Library. Performed by Mohegan theatre-maker Madeline Sayet, Where We Belong showcases an Indigenous theatre-maker’s journeys across geographic borders, personal history, and cultural legacies, in search of a place to belong. Mei Ann Teo directs this piece, which runs from April 15th to May 8th. Press Night is Tuesday, April 19th at 6:30pm. Media are also welcome to come on Opening Night, Wednesday, April 20th at 7:00pm. Page, this electric play about a young man creating his own path at a storied prep school features a new Gospel and R&B score created by celebrated musician Crystal Monee Hall, who serves as composer and musical director. Philadelphia Theatre Company Launches Citywide Campaign to Support Sanitation Workers

Philadelphia Theatre Company is celebrating essential workers and literally talking trash throughout the run of their Co-World Premiere of Lindsay Joelle’s The Garbologists. PTC is supporting the unsung heroes of the pandemic with a free performance special for sanitation workers and their families on Thursday, November 11th at 2:30. Starting the same day, PTC will launch a citywide campaign to encourage residents to support their sanitation workers through the distribution of 10,000 #supportsantiationworkers stickers for recycling and garbage bins. These will be available through local civic associations, at special events, and at the PTC box office. The sticker used exclusive artwork from noted local artist Alloyius Mcilwaine, who is also creating and debuting five original art pieces using Philadelphia city recycling bins as a canvas. The pieces will be on display in the PTC lobby and auctioned off during the run of the show. The artwork will be available for viewing in the front windows of the Suzanne Roberts Theatre lobby starting on opening night.

This timely and relevant Co-World Premiere with Pittsburgh’s City Theatre, features a white, conservative, proud union member and a Black, liberal, ivy-educated newbie who just joined the sanitation route. When they find something on the curb too valuable to throw away, they’re forced to re-evaluate each other and accept each other on their own terms. The 2021-2022 season will feature two world premiere plays, a Tony Award-winning play with soaring gospel and R&B music, and a chance for audiences to reawaken their senses. The curtain rises again with The Garbologists by Lindsay Joelle, a Co-World Premiere with the City Theatre in Pittsburgh. The comedy runs November 11 to December 5, 2021. Philadelphia Theaters to Require Audiences To Be Vaccinated or Provide Negative COVID Test

The curtain is finally rising again! Dozens of regional theatres are back in full-swing preparing for their grand return to the stage for in-person, indoor productions. The upcoming 2021-2022 season is coming to life just as continuing COVID-19 variants continue to be an on-going cause for concern. For the protection of audiences and theatre workers, Theatre Philadelphia has developed and issued a new Audience COVID-19 Vaccine and Mask Policy for the start of the new season. Over 30 area theatres have already joined Theatre Philadelphia in signing on to the new policy. The policy includes asking theatre audiences to be fully vaccinated or provide a negative COVID-19 test taken within a certain time period ahead of showtime. Audiences will also be required to wear masks following the current policy of the City of Philadelphia for indoor theatre performances where all audiences are not vaccinated. Additionally, twelve area theatres have gone a step farther and will only allow patrons that are fully vaccinated.

Philadelphia Theatre Company Presents New Virtual Play The Days Of Re-Creation

Philadelphia Theatre Company begins its 46th season with the rolling world premiere of The Days of Re-Creation: A Virtual Play on September 30, 2020 at 7:00pm. The play cycle (a collection of short plays around the same theme) is the brainchild of Devenand Janki, Artistic Director of the company Live & In Color, which commissioned seven prolific playwrights of color, including B.D. Wong (Tony award winning actor), Lauren Yee (Signature Theatre resident and writer of Cambodian Rock Band and The Big Leap), and Masi Asare (winner of the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award), AriDy Nox, SEVAN, Nandita Shenoy, and Philadelphia playwright Erlina Ortiz, who contributed the play La Egoista. Directed by Rebecca Aparacio, the play features seven 10-minute plays relating to the seven days of creation from the Book of Genesis.
