Sanitation Workers Take Center Stage in World Premiere at Philadelphia Theatre Company

Honoring our essential workers, Philadelphia Theatre Company welcomes audiences back to the Suzanne Roberts Theatre for in-person theatre with a hopeful story about finding common ground in the most uncommon places. PTC is thrilled to kick-off its 2021-2022 season with the Co-World Premiere of Lindsay Joelle’s The Garbologists, from November 11 to December 5, 2021, with opening night on Wednesday, November 17th. This timely and relevant Co-World Premiere with Pittsburgh’s City Theatre, features a white, conservative, proud union member and a Black, liberal, ivy-educated newbie who just joined the sanitation route. When they find something on the curb too valuable to throw away, they’re forced to re-evaluate each other and accept each other on their own terms. Directed by Brooklyn-based Estefanía Fadul, The Garbologists stars Bensalem native Ngozi Anyanwu, making their Philadelphia region debut, joined by Philadelphia favorite Steven Rishard.

Azuka Theatre presents the World Premiere of Young Money Philadelphia playwright Erlina Ortiz, directed by Briana Gause. The show will run from November 3 to November 21, 2021, with opening nights on Saturday, November 6th and Sunday, November 7th, at the Louis Bluver Theatre at The Drake, 302 S. Hicks Street. Azuka return to live and in-person theatre comes with their continued dedication to supporting local artists and raising up Philadelphia voices. Ortiz is part of the Azuka New Pages Writer's Group, and the entire cast and crew hail from the greater Philadelphia region. In the play, Tomasina aka Kila-T is Hip-hop's newest chart topper. Elegant and prideful Gardenia has been laid off from her job of 20 years and now she cleans Kila’s dressing room. When an attack on Kila’s concert forces the two women together, questions of morality, success, and redemption are danced around as these women discover they may have more to learn from each other than they think. Anegla Bey (they/them/theirs) plays Kila-T and Johanna Tolentino (she/her) plays Gardenia. Azuka continues its pay-what-you-decide model for this show where audiences are invited to experience the art on stage and pay based on the value of their experience after.

New York Times best-selling humorist Josh Piven brings his unique brand of comedy to Philadelphia with the world premiere of Muddled, A Stage Comedy, from June 16 through June 26 at Drexel URBN Annex (3401 Filbert St). Penned by the author of The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook and directed by William Steinberger, Muddled gives theater audiences a best-case scenario for what happens when a group of hot-headed headbangers meet the home-grown hipsters of Brooklyn. In this craft brewed comedy, Piven trades navigating alligator pits for navigating mosh pits, and surviving frostbite for surviving the frosty bite of a quick-witted hipster. Muddled is Piven’s second play, following 2013’s hit No Reservations.
