Ice Cream Beer Floats Return to Sassafras in Old City, Along with Pretzel Breaded Fried Calamari

Your pals at Sassafras (48 S. 2nd Street, Philadelphia) in Old City have the perfect answer to the current heat and humidity. Cool down at Philadelphia’s “Grande Dame” of neighborhood bars with unique Sassafras flavored ice cream, available in one of four beer float combinations, or as a treat on its own. They also present a new must-try dish with pretzel breaded Fried Calamari, served with a carrot, jalapeno and chili-lime dipping sauce.

Sassafras ice cream is house-made in small batches that feature the delicate flavor of authentic sassafras, with hints of root beer and liquorice.  Ice cream will be available in a three scoop sized dish for $8. Just as the Sassafras tree is the only tree with four unique leaf patterns, those rascals Donal McCoy and Neil Laughlin have developed four special floats pairings for $10 each that include Crabbies Ginger Beer, Kasteel Rouge,  Rodenbach and Youngs Double Chocolate Stout.  Ice cream and beer floats are available through at least Labor Day.

As the perfect summertime duo, enjoy your float with a plate of highly addictive pretzel breaded Fried Calamari, served with a carrot, jalapeno and chili-lime dipping sauce. Fried Calamari is the newest addition to the lunch and dinner menu, and will cost $9.50.
