Kensington Derby and Arts Festival Brings Back Mud, Live Music, Food Trucks and Vendors

Fishtown District announces the return of the Philadelphia Federal Credit Union Kensington Derby and Arts Festival on Saturday, May 14, 2022, from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. One of Philadelphia's largest spring festivals is back after a pandemic break and ready to take over Trenton Avenue from Norris Street to Frankford Avenue. The fourteenth year for this event will feature over 100+ local vendors, artists, musicians, food and drink, performers - and a parade of homemade vehicles. Derby competitors are encouraged to wear costumes and make it to the finish line in their human-powered vehicles and floats. Over 15,000 people are expected to come out and cheer them on along the three mile obstacle course that stretches through East Kensington and Fishtown. Mud, bubbles and other obstacles along the route will be presented by some of the District's biggest names, including Johnny Brenda's, Philadelphia Brewing Co., and Kensington Community Food Co-Op. Winners will be crowned in categories that have ranged over the years like Best Art, Best Costume, Best Engineering, Best Breakdown, Media Choice and, of course, the highly coveted Judge's Choice Award. A Few Good Men, the play upon which the Academy Award nominated film is based, is about a team of lawyers who uncover a high-level conspiracy covered up in the name of patriotism.This searing drama runs May 3 to May 22, 2022. The mother and son duo will bring the city's largest dim sum restaurant, bar and lounge to the hottest and fastest growing area of the city, between the bustling Fishtown and Northern Liberties neighborhoods. The new restaurant will feature 6,000 feet of indoor space with seating for around 100+ guests, with the final numbers still in the works. For the first time ever, Dim Sum House will head outdoors with a stunning new covered dim sum and cocktail garden that will seat around 100+ guests and 3,000 square feet of space. The indoor and outdoor space combined make this the largest Dim Sum House restaurant to date. From the kitchen, guests will enjoy a menu that focuses on two authentic styles of Chinese dim sum (Shanghai and Cantonese), plus fried rice, noodles, chef specialties and familiar Chinese favorites from the Jiang Nan region of China. Notable favorites include Dim Sum House’s celebrated Pork Soup Dumplings, Dan Dan Noodles, Roast Pork Bao, Peking Duck, Pork Belly & Mustard Greens, Hot and Sour Soup, and Norwegian Whole King Crab done three ways. The menu will feature ample vegan, vegetarian and gluten free offerings. PTC is excited to launch the National Tour of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company’s production of Where We Belong, in association with Folger Shakespeare Library. Performed by Mohegan theatre-maker Madeline Sayet, Where We Belong showcases an Indigenous theatre-maker’s journeys across geographic borders, personal history, and cultural legacies, in search of a place to belong. Mei Ann Teo directs this piece, which runs from April 15th to May 8th. Press Night is Tuesday, April 19th at 6:30pm. Media are also welcome to come on Opening Night, Wednesday, April 20th at 7:00pm. Decor includes authentic Turkish decor and handmade plates from Turkey, beautiful exposed brick, unique lighting, ornate tiles and black walnut tables. For cuisine, the menu is a mix of traditional taste with modern presentation. Pera is BYO and the owners are happy to make wine and spirit recommendations. Pera's grand opening leads off six weeks and six grand openings for Northern Liberties, which will soon announce details for openings that will include The Shake Seafood, Ray's Reusables, 70six Boutique, Wag Watch and 1040 Creative Art Center and Gallery.
