Restaurant Grand Opening: Fergie's Pub Owners Debut The Goat in Rittenhouse Square
/Fergie Carey and Jim McNamara, owners of Fergie's Pub, announce the grand opening of The Goat at 1907 Samson Street, in Philadelphia's bustling Rittenhouse neighborhood. The former home of Oh! Shea's will debut as a brand new, crisp, clean and quirky modern day pub and restaurant with 2,400 square feet, two bars, 118 seats, two fireplaces and eye-catching details. In the kitchen, Chef Adrian Geronimo presents a menu of elevated comfort food prepared with fresh local ingredients that is both vegetarian and vegan friendly. Highlights include Ancho Chili Braised Short Rib, Angry Mussels, Seitan Bulgogi Bowl, Reuben Burger and Green Chile BBQ Jackfruit Sandwich. At the bar, look for eight drafts pouring craft beer and a cider, plus nearly two dozen beers by the bottle and can, a selection of cider by the can, a hard seltzer, and a dozen wines by the glass. Speciality cocktails will make their debut later this winter. Thursday's hours will be opening at 7:00pm. Opening hours are 4:00pm to 2:00am seven days a week, with the bar open 4:00pm to 2:00am and the kitchen open 4:00pm to Midnight. Lunch and weekend brunch will start in the coming weeks. Happy Hour runs Monday through Friday, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.
"With The Goat, we aim to bring a solid pub and kitchen to the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood with a nice range of smartly priced, approachable beers and wines, and a nifty menu from Chef," said Carey." We of course will have a great burger and many vegan and vegetarian options. We shall be a smart, fresh looking pub that anyone in Philly would want on their block. The new corner staple bar - that is polished but definitely not in any way pretentious."
CHEF
The Goat is proud to introduce Chef Adrian Geronimo. Geronimo is the brother of the chef at Fergie's Pub (Geraldo Geronimo) and in fact Adrian taught his brother Geraldo how to cook.
"The Goat will present a menu of elevated comfort food prepared with fresh local ingredients that is both vegetarian and vegan friendly," said Geronimo. "The inspiration for the dishes at The Goat come from my years of experience working in a multitude of restaurants of diverse cuisines throughout Philadelphia. My passion is creating a diverse menu merging flavor profiles from different influences to elevate traditional dishes. In addition to classic pub favorites I always pays special attention on serving vegetarian and vegan options. Using the same flavor and marination techniques I am able to create warm comfort food for plant based eaters."
Chef added, "My initial foray into cooking came early when I was a teenager in Puebla, Mexico, cooking with my mom and grandma. I always say if I can cook 50 percent like my mom and 50 percent like my grandma, I’m in really great shape."
Carey said, "During every tasting, Chef blew me away with his cooking, great attitude, and sense of humor. He was a great fit for what we are aiming to bring to Rittenhouse and The Goat."

THE NAME
The Goat is named after the Billy the Rittenhouse Goat statue in Rittenhouse Square just a block away. Carey said, "We held a competition on line and three people suggested The Goat. Jim also suggested it. We had over 2500 name suggestions. We like it because of Billy The Rittenhouse Goat - the statue in Rittenhouse Square. He is so loved he turned to gold. The three winners all get a happy hour with 20 of their friends. It was a fun way to engage the community in our newest venture."
The name "The Goat" also stands for Greatest of All Time - and the vibe the owners are going for is to enjoy their modern pub - and give the greatest of all time pub experience in the area - with great food, smartly priced drinks, a crisp clean vibe, a great central location and lots of memories to be made with co-workers, friends and family members.
VIBE AND VISION
According to Carey, "The vibe inside will also mirror our food and drink program, as being approachable, smart, and tasteful. We hope to be the mid-priced range pub for the neighborhood. We have options and price points that we hope will bring in neighbors several times a week."
Upon entering The Goat, and walking by the expansive windows on Samson Street, guests will be greeted by two oval shaped bars, with one seating 22 people and the other 30 people. Two dining areas will seat 80 people, and both include their own cozy fireplace. Above the central dining area, look for two eye-popping red lights that pay homage to the female figure. The lights are created by artist Victor Perez and if you look closely you can see they are artfully made out of skateboards. Other interior design elements include art and photos that pay home to some of the Greatest of All Time figures, like Jimi Hendrix, Jason Kelce and Ben Simmons.
Outside in nice weather, look for seating for 24 people to debut this coming spring.
Renovations for The Goat included a brand new floor, new lighting, new bartops, art and interior design elements, reconfiguring the bar space to make more open space for guests, paint, a second fireplace and other bells and whistles to give it the crisp, clean and welcoming vibe the owners were striving for.
ABOUT THE OWNERS
Carey and McNamara have known each other for 27 years. Carey said, "I knew Jim from when I worked the bar at McGlinchey’s. He came to work for me when I opened Fergie’s Pub. He was in the kitchen on opening night. He worked in the kitchen for several years then left and bartended around town - McGlinchey’s and The Dark Horse. Jim came back to work at Fergie’s Pub around 2000 then bartended there for 17 years before becoming my partner there in 2018. Jim is a workhorse who loves Fergie’s Pub, loves the business and loves the game - almost as much as he loves the Flyers."
When asked why partner on another bar, Carey replied, "The timing was right. I was bought out of Monk’s Cafe and the Oh! Shea’s opportunity was put on my plate. Jim has been working hard along side me for decades. He is a great partner. It was a win-win for all involved parties - and we are beyond excited."
Carey owns with McNamara Fergie's Pub and The Goat. Carey also owns with other partners The Fairview that opened earlier this month, plus Grace Tavern.
