The city has tons of amazing neighborhood-based festivals with food, drink and music. We wanted to take that one step farther and celebrate all that makes America’s most historic square mile unique. We curated the event to give Old City’s merchants, artists, makers and creative community a platform to shine for the region.”
From its historic past to its artful present to its tech future, Old City is the place to be! Look for vibrant and diverse offerings that make the neighborhood the historic gem of Philadelphia. New this year, a marketplace will be located right next to the runway, so Old City Fest attendees can shop the runway looks instantly.
Barnet Fair has carefully curated a show and marketplace that highlights some of Old City’s most exclusive boutiques. Old City has some of the most unique shopping in the city, and it will take center stage at the festival!
Barnet Fair will also provide hair and makeup for the models to compete their look.
Petite Jardin en Ville will decorate the runway and marketplace with their unique flower and plant displays, making it a truly unique experience.
DJ Kittycrumb will spin music live on stage.
MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE
Old City Fest will feature live performances by Ernest Stuart, Chill Moody, and Red Baraat, plus DJ sets by Philly's own turntable wunderkind DJ D-ILL!
Headlining the festival stage this year is Red Baraat, a riveting Brooklyn octet called “The best party band in years” by NPR and “A Big Band for the World” by the WALL STREET JOURNAL. Known for its unprecedented, high energy, gut-busting fusion of jazz, hip-hop beats, rock muscle, funky go-go, and scalding hot bhangra, the band will be appearing at Old City Fest as part of their 2017 Fall World Tour.
Also performing on the main stage is West Philadelphia native Chill Moody. Moody has performed at Wawa Welcome America, the Roots Picnic, the Kimmel Center, The Fillmore, the TLA, The Trocadero and Hard Rock Café. He won “Best Rapper” in Philadelphia Magazine’s annual “Best of Philly” issue and was also named Philadelphia’s Music Ambassador by Councilman David Oh.
Returning to Old City Fest this year is Ernest Stuart, a Philadelphia native and versatile trombonist who can play various styles of music from jazz, salsa, R&B, neo-soul to hip-hop.
Twelve-year-old Dylan Curtis, a.k.a., DJ D-ILL, will also return to the festival this year. His previous DJ engagements include the White House's fifth annual Kids' "State Dinner" and Host/DJ for Kid Zone at Wawa Welcome America. He is a student of Old City’s Scratch DJ Academy.
Plus, look out for other pop-up performances throughout the festival footprint!
FAMILY FUN ZONE
The family fun zone will feature performances from the Give & Take Jugglers, Philadelphia Dance Academy, Music Monkey Jungle and many more. AMERICAN HERITAGE® Chocolate, the historic division of Mars Wrigley Confectionary, will present the history and preparation of colonial chocolate at the Betsy Ross House. Stop by to experience chocolate the same way that 18th century chocolate maker, Mary Crathorne, did! Check in as special guests will be visiting throughout the day. PHILADELPHIA’S HISTORIC DISTRICT
Look for Philadelphia’s Historic District, a first-time sponsor and one of VISIT PHILADELPHIA’s marketing initiatives, to make a lively splash along Arch Street during Old City Fest, bringing lots of new activities to the annual autumnal celebration from many first-time participants.
Festivalgoers can try for a hole-in-one at Franklin Square’s on-site mini-golf, then test their Revolutionary War trivia skills for prizes at the Museum of the American Revolution’s tent. After making colonial-style paper hats and wigs at the Carpenters’ Hall tent or theatrical props at the Arden Theatre Company’s station, kids can play dress up with Elfreth’s Alley’s 18th-century wardrobes. The day will also include stories at Once Upon A Nation benches, meet and greets with Ellie and Donny, the National Constitution Center’s donkey and elephant mascots, 18th-century chocolate making at the Betsy Ross House, a Philadelphia Historic District prize wheel and so much more. The oversized and always-popular XOXO structure will be the perfect backdrop for participants to capture the memorable day with family photos and selfies. (*New to Old City Fest for 2017.)
